The Difference Between Conviction and Condemnation

John 16:5-11 and Romans 8:1-4

Conviction and condemnation feel subjectively about the same to us. However, conviction is from God and for our good, while condemnation is not from God and harms us. Conviction should be accepted, while condemnation should be rejected. Therefore it is very important to know the difference between conviction and condemnation.

Conviction Condemnation
Comes From God* Other People, Ourself, or Satan
Attacks Specific sins in our life that we need to be free from. Our self worth as a person.
Leads You
  1. To God.
  2. To have hope.
  3. To get up and do better.
  4. To repent/change.
  1. Away from God.
  2. To feel hopeless.
  3. To give up and feel like a failure.
  4. To continue as before.
Results In Our changing for the better, with new, healthy patterns for our life. Also, a greater humility, dependence on God, thankfulness to God, and experiencing of God's power in our life. Feeling like a failure, guilt, discouragement, hopelessness, depression, lower self-worth, reacting with anger, addictions.
Our Response
  1. Know the difference between conviction and condemnation.
  2. Accept Conviction.
  3. Change and get rid of our sin.
